Even over the din of the shower, Brandon could hear Ana talking to herself outside. He stood under the spray and let the remnants of his fight wash down the drain while he tried to figure out how he could have Ana and keep her safe at the same time. No scenario he could think of would work out, much to his dismay.

His beast was not as exhausted as it should have been. It threw a tantrum, much like a child with knives for hands. Brandon’s insides ached more from the beast’s indiscriminate anger than it did from the fight with Roderick.

Brandon hadn’t followed Ana to hurt her, but Roderick hadn’t known that. Roderick knew Brandon’s control was tenuous at best. The Alpha had made the right decision, no matter how mad it made Brandon.

He sighed and pressed his head to the cold shower wall.

Why couldn’t he make anything in his life work? From Ana to the beast, nothing happened the way Brandon wanted. The beast continued its revolt as if it could separate itself from him and run straight to Ana. His mate seemed caught in an eternal loop, forever bouncing between her love and hatred for him.

He wished he could free her, but he couldn’t bring himself to let her go. Just the thought of never seeing her again wrecked him. Warmth rolled down his cheeks. He wiped it away and blamed it on the shower.

The front door opened. He listened to the soft click of the lock as she slid it into place and then to the creak of the bathroom door when she opened it to step inside.

“I brought you what I could find. These aren’t your clothes, but I’m sure they’ll fit.”

He laughed, thought the sound felt hollow and forced. “Men don’t all come in one size, you know.”

“I wouldn’t know,” she said softly. “I didn’t exactly go around gathering more men to compare them to you after you left.”

There was a moment of silence. Brandon felt the jab in her words. It hit him right in the heart. He wanted to tell her that he understood. No one could fill the void in his life, either.

Before he could untangle his tongue, the shower curtain parted. Ana stood outside the tub, naked as the day she’d been born. His jaw dropped. Before he could stop himself, the beast’s heady growl slipped out of him. He clenched his jaw tight and stepped back even though the bear did its best to shove him toward her.

“Ana? What are you…?” He swallowed.

As she stepped into the shower spray, his gaze dropped. It roved over her pale skin, over her shoulders and breasts as the water sluiced over the peach fuzz on her body. His stomach tightened. Every ounce of blood in his body rushed south.

She glanced down and the corners of her mouth lifted. “Glad to see you still find me attractive.”

“I’m ready for the gods to smite me, because I want this to be the last thing I see before I die.
